Emergency Board Up Services

We cover broken windows, kicked-in doors and fire or storm openings with plywood screwed to the framing. That keeps a house or storefront shut against rain, wind and intruders until the glass or door can be replaced.

How Emergency Board Up Is Done

Loose shards still hanging in the frame get pulled or tapped out with a hammer and heavy gloves. The glass on the floor goes into a contractor bag before anyone works near the opening. We measure the window or door with a tape measure, then cut 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch CDX plywood on a circular saw so the sheet overlaps the trim by a couple of inches on every side. On wood-framed walls, the panel is fastened with an impact driver and 3-inch exterior screws into the studs and header, spaced about every 6 inches. Screws matter here, since nails pull out easily and a pry bar can lift them. For glass storefronts and masonry openings, we set 2x4 strongbacks across the inside of the opening and draw the plywood tight against them with carriage bolts, which leaves the aluminum frame undamaged. Doors that still need to work get a hinged plywood cover with a hasp and padlock. Before leaving, we tape plastic sheeting over any roof hole or gap the plywood can't seal and photograph each covered opening for the insurance claim.

How Long Does Emergency Board Up Take?

Emergency board up usually takes 30 minutes to an hour for a single broken window once a crew is on site. A house with a dozen fire-vented windows, a smashed storefront or a second-story opening that needs ladders can run most of a day. Late-night calls may take a little longer to reach, since the truck has to arrive loaded with plywood and lumber cut for the job.

Can You Do Emergency Board Up Yourself?

A single small ground-floor window is the part of a board up most homeowners can handle with a sheet of plywood, a drill and exterior screws. Second-story openings, large storefront glass and fire-damaged walls are a different job, since a full 4x8 sheet catches wind like a sail on a ladder and charred framing may not hold screws. Hanging tempered glass can also drop without warning, so heavy gloves and eye protection come first.

How Long Does an Emergency Board Up Last?

Plywood board up on a sound wood frame typically holds for several weeks to a few months, long enough for new glass, doors and insurance work to get scheduled. Exposed CDX starts to delaminate and turn gray after a season of rain, and screws can loosen as the framing swells and dries. Buildings left boarded longer often get painted panels or polycarbonate covers instead, since bare plywood draws attention and weathers faster.

How Much Does Emergency Board Up Cost?

Emergency board up typically costs between $185 and $1,650. A single ground-floor window sits at the low end, while a fire-vented house or a full storefront lands at the high end. The final price depends on how many openings need covering, how much 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch CDX plywood and 2x4 strongback lumber the job takes, and whether second-story work calls for ladders. Expect an after-hours surcharge on top of materials and labor for calls after midnight or on holidays.
